Guilty or Not?

If you were on this jury, how would you vote?

Mother sets fire to her daughter’s gloating rapist

A Spanish mother has taken revenge on the man who raped her 13-year-old daughter at knifepoint by dousing him in petrol and setting him alight. He died of his injuries in hospital on Friday.

Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, 69, had been sent to jail for nine years in 1998, but was let out on a three-day pass and returned to his home town of Benejúzar, 30 miles south of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.

While there, he passed his victim’s mother in the street and allegedly taunted her about the attack. He is said to have called out “How’s your daughter?”, before heading into a crowded bar.

Shortly after, the woman walked into the bar, poured a bottle of petrol over Soriano and lit a match. She watched as the flames engulfed him, before walking out.

Details here. I'd say let her go.

This may be a strange answer, but I have given these type of scenarios quite a bit of thought, being the morbid person I am.

If that was my daughter who was raped I would've done the same thing in that situation. However, I recognize that society can't endorse such behavior. I'd understand that by doing such an act society does have the right to put me in jail, possibly for the rest of my life.

But, I'd try not to get caught. If I couldn't enact the vengence without getting caught then I would still do it and hire a really good lawyer and plead something like temporary insanity.

That being said, the guy would still burn.

Now, how would I vote? Leniency would be my guiding principle. Could I vote for manslaughter as against murder one? I'd do that hoping that the judge would sentence the poor woman to probation or a few months in jail.

I’m having a hard time feeling any sympathy for the mother’s plight. There’s just no way for me to feel lenient towards someone who up and committed first-degree murder solely out of vengeance. I understand the carnal urge for catharsis and retaliation, but we’re supposed to rise above that if we’re to prove that we’re better than the ones who hurt us in the first place. She not only failed at that, she sank beneath his level.

Keep her in jail.

(And if anyone asks what I’d do – as if that had any relevance regarding what is actually right or wrong – I cannot answer, and nor can anyone else who hasn’t been in that position. But I would imagine I would probably beat the guy up, or try to. But not to the point of fucking murder – and especially not in such a horrific manner.)

Oh, no. He'd be dead. I'd probably wait and not do it in a crowded bar, but especially with him taunting Mom before entering the bar? He knew what he did, he enjoyed it, and he was almost definitely going to do it again.

Fire, though? Always a bad choice. A lot of them tend to survive, and you don't look sympathetic enough to a jury. Plus, it's a pretty horrific way to die.

Interestingly (to me, anyway), I was just talking about revenge t'other day (admittedly, not quite to the same, somewhat gruesome extent...)

If I was on the jury? Temporary insanity: that's what her lawyer needs to go for, anyway. He taunted her, she snapped, and *poof*

(I've never claimed to be a good person...)
